On the day Luke graduated from university, Luca Westbrook told me he wanted to take me somewhere. It was a small leisure park on the outskirts of town. But I remembered that this place used to be just an empty lot.
"Why did you bring me here?"
I asked him, confused.
"Over a decade ago, when I came to visit Luke's mom's grave, I saw someone driving a little car way too fast around here."
"I had never seen a little car like that go so fast. Out of curiosity, I watched for a few more seconds."
I was chasing a dog dealer at the time, foot heavy on the gas, practically flooring it. My little car ended up wrecked beyond repair.
I totaled my car trying to save Rosie, and the repairs cost me six thousand dollars.
"I saw this big, burly man get out of the car, and I was about to go help when I saw him knock the other guy down completely. Later, I would see her running down the street every evening, chasing that nearly-dead golden retriever."
Back then, Little Luke would sprint two miles just to get bones from the lamb soup stall. He said, "I knew right then that anyone willing to give up their car for a dog must be a truly kind person."
I snorted. "What if I just like dogs and dislike kids? How many times can Luke take a beating from me?" He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and laughed, "I trust you, that's why I purposely sat with your mom at the matchmaking corner." It turns out, he had already set his eyes on me. I always thought I was the one who had forced him because I was attracted to him.
