Chapter 17

　　When Luke was in his third year of middle school, Jarrett was laid off due to a midlife crisis.
　　That day, he went all out and made a huge spread of food. But during dinner, he suddenly put down his fork.
　　"I need to talk about something."
　　"Wait."
　　Luke leashed Rosie, then stuffed the cats into their carriers.
　　"You're announcing a divorce, right? Mom, don't worry, Rosie and I are with you, and the cats I've raised will stay with you too." Jarrett grumbled, "Little brat, you're pushing me to break up with your mother, huh?" He nervously tugged at my sleeve. "I've been laid off."
　　Luke clicked his tongue in disappointment, then released Rosie from the leash and let the cats out of their carriers.
　　"Is that it? I thought it was something big."
　　Jarrett looked at me. When we got married, he promised to give me his salary every month as long as I took care of Luke. I pulled my hand back and calmly went back to eating. "You're in your forties, but you've got the mentality of a kid."
　　"So what if you don't have a job? You not working doesn't mean I'm not working. Worst case, you stay home with the kids, and I'll be the one bringing in the money." Over the years, I'd saved most of what he earned in the bank, enough to support the whole family.
　　Jarrett was really good at managing the household. He took care of everything for Luke during his high school years, handling all the big and small things.
　　On the day of the SAT, I made sure to walk Luke to the exam hall with Rosie. Rosie was getting older, but she still loved to follow Luke around, just like she used to.
　　Jarrett was more nervous than his own son, standing next to me, sweating bullets. I teased him, telling him he wasn't even taking the test, but he got all grumpy and sulked.
　　Luke did well on the test, and the college he chose is really close to home.
　　On the first day of university, he looked at Jarrett and me, our hands interlocked, and snorted. "Don't get too proud. I have no classes this afternoon, and I'm coming back."
　　"Ugh, should've had you apply to a school farther away."
