I held Luke's hand as we left, and when we were heading downstairs, I ran into Jarrett carrying the vegetables upstairs. He asked where I was going, but I didn't even glance at him.
He asked where we were going, but I didn't even look at him. Jarrett arrived home two hours later than me. When he got back, the living room lights were off. I had already bathed Luke and tucked him into bed.
"Mom, what did Grandpa mean by that? Does he hate me?"
"Don't think like that. You're my best little one. How about you let Rosie sleep with you tonight?" I tucked him in, then got up and headed to the living room.
The lights in the living room were still off, and Jarrett was sitting alone on the balcony, letting the cold wind blow. His hands were red from the chill. I went back inside and brought him a hot water bottle to warm his hands. "Don't blame yourself too much."
Jarrett scratched his hair. "I should have done better. If I had known earlier, I wouldn't have let them raise Luke." I patted his shoulder. "You have your limits. Sometimes you can't take care of everything."
"It's cold outside. Come inside."
"Jessica."
I turned my head, hearing him continue, "Thank you."
In reality, I should be thanking him, as he'd so generously given me a son.
From that day on, Luke became my son, and Jarrett became his stepfather.
"Luke, get this straight—this is my wife!"
"I know, but Mommy likes me. Mommy knits me scarves, Mommy even takes me to school."
"And I'm always with Mommy. What about you? You're nothing!"
Jarrett was furious, and every night, he'd quietly carry him back to his own room.
But the next morning, Luke would always appear back in my bed. The father-son rivalry continued like this for two years. When Luke entered second grade, Jarrett strictly forbade him from sharing a bed with me.
"You're in second grade now. You're a big boy, don't you know there's a difference between boys and girls?"
Luke grinned and asked me, "Mom, what does he mean?"
Now, he doesn't even call him 'Dad' anymore.
Jarrett was angry, holding Rosie in his arms and complaining.
"They're ganging up on me. It's better when it's just the two of us, father and daughter." Rosie coldly wriggled out of his arms and lay beside me. I let out a merciless laugh.
