When we arrived at my parents' house, my parents immediately pulled long faces. Luke obediently greeted them, "Good morning, Grandpa, Grandma."
Jarrett and my father went to the kitchen to cook, and my mother stayed in the living room with us, chatting. "Your mom misses you. She told me in a dream last night that she wanted to see you," she said, looking at Luke affectionately.
"When you're on break, you don't come to visit us. Is someone keeping you locked up at home, not letting you come over?" Grandma always said this while giving me a knowing look, making me feel uncomfortable.
Luke moved closer to me, "Dad didn't come with us for the New Year. Mom brought me here alone, it's not right."
My mother's face turned sour. "Some women, just for money, have no shame at all. A good child like him has been taught poorly!"
I held my tongue, suppressing my anger, since she was my elder.
After the meal, I took Luke to the restroom. He suddenly whispered, "Mom, I don't like Grandpa and Grandma." I crouched down to fix his coat and asked, "Why don't you like them, Luke?" Even though my mother-in-law disliked me, Luke was their biological grandson, so there was no reason for them to dislike him.
"Grandpa and Grandma don't like me. Grandpa hits me, it hurts so much, and Grandma is scary when she yells at people," he said, his voice trembling. I was about to ask more when I heard Jarrett's voice.
"Honey, we're out of vegetables. Come with me to get some." Luke's face turned pale, and he clutched my clothes tightly. "Mom, don't leave." I patted his hand and led him to the living room, where Jarrett had already changed his shoes and was ready to go out.
He pulled me aside and whispered, "My parents want to talk to the child alone. Come downstairs with me." I flatly refused.
