One evening during the holiday, I spent a long time planning to make something delicious for Luke.
The next morning, when I opened my eyes, Luke was suddenly much taller. I screamed, jumping three feet in the air.
"What the hell, dude, who are you?"
Jarrett, sitting quietly in the corner, gave me a long, hurt look as though I had committed some unforgivable sin. After spending so much time with the cat, dog, and child, I had almost forgotten that I still had a husband working outside.
I scratched my head, embarrassed, and apologized, "I wasn't fully awake this morning. I thought a burglar came in." Luke, holding Rosie, angrily pushed open the bedroom door. He was still holding the little pillow my mom had made for him.
It seemed that Jarrett had forcibly brought him back to his own bedroom last night. Now, Luke was puffing up his cheeks, fuming as he said, "I hate Dad! This is my spot!"
Jarrett, firm in his stance, refused to comfort him. "Who says only I can sleep with my wife? You can sleep with your wife."
"I've always slept here when you weren't home," Luke grumbled.
"I'm back now, go ahead and sleep."
Luke rushed into my arms, crying, "Mom, I want you to be my wife. I want to sleep with you."
Jarrett was clearly frustrated.
After breakfast, Jarrett was preparing to take Luke to his grandparents' house.
I hadn't planned to go, but Luke tugged at my hand and whispered in my ear, "Mom, please come with us. I'm scared." I froze for a moment, and then I wrapped his cold little hand tightly in mine.
