I called Jarrett back and told him that Luke was fine, so he didn't need to worry while he was away.
"As long as you're there, I'm not worried about him," he said, his gaze locking onto me. After a long silence, he finally explained, his voice tinged with frustration.
"I've been waiting for your call for so long, and neither of you even thought to call me," The more he spoke, the more wronged he sounded, even starting to accuse me and Luke of our misdeeds. I tried to comfort him while asking if he could make it back to celebrate the holidays with us. However, due to an issue with an overseas project, Jarrett couldn't make it back in time.
It was the first holiday I spent with Luke. A month before, our female cat gave birth to four adorable kittens. Luke's face would turn bright red with excitement, and every morning, the first thing he'd do after waking up was rush to the kitten nest to watch them.
"We've taken care of the big cat, Mom. She didn't die. She's still feeding the kittens," he proudly told me.
"Rosie, Rosie, come look."
"Luke, come here."
He scampered over to me, asking, "What's up, Mom?" I wiped the sweat from his forehead and placed the scarf I had knitted around his neck.
"Let's see if it fits."
I had been knitting scarves to pass the time by following online tutorials. The scarf looked great on him, and I was very pleased. He was also happy, clapping his hands and turning to show Luke.
"Mom made me a new scarf! I'm going to wear it and go play." Rosie, feeling left out, ran to me, pressing itself into my arms, nuzzling me until I put its little bib on, at which point it was satisfied. Over the next month, Luke's smile gradually faded. The kittens, still under a month old, were prone to accidents, and Luke would dutifully follow them around cleaning up after them, sweating with exhaustion.
