Another Sunday came, and Jarrett finally found some time to call me.
I pointed the camera at Luke, who was busy scooping litter for the little cat.
"Rosie adopted a new cat and is busy scooping its litter," Jarrett chuckled softly, "He's being so obedient."
Luke didn't realize I was standing behind him. After finally finishing, he plopped down on the ground, turned his back to me, and began talking to the cat.
Rosie, feeling neglected, tried to squeeze into his arms but was ruthlessly pushed away. "Rosie, you can't steal the cat's spot. When the cat has babies, it will die."
"We both need to let the cat have space."
My face changed. I squatted next to him, checking the mother cat carefully. There was nothing unusual. I sighed in relief and asked, "Luke, why did you say the cat would die after having babies?" Luke didn't even look up. He answered, "My grandparents told me that." I was shocked by my parents' ridiculous notion, but still, I patiently corrected him.
"Luke, I told you…"
He interrupted my words and seriously explained, "Okay, mom."
I froze for a few seconds, as if someone had lightly brushed my heart with a feather. It felt strange, yet not unpleasant.
"Alright, then Mom will tell you, as long as you take good care of it, the cat won't die even if it has kittens."
"It and the kittens will stay with you."
Luke's eyes lit up, and he quickly asked, "Just like how Mom will always be with me?" I kissed his cheek and seriously replied, "Yes, both Mom and the kittens will stay with you." He was thrilled, excitedly kissing the kittens and hugging Rosie's neck, comforting it.
"Rosie, don't be sad. I'll always stay with you too."
