In the middle of the night, I woke up thirsty, and that's when I noticed the little guy had somehow climbed into my bed.
He was wearing the dinosaur pajamas I'd bought for him, lying on top of the blanket, with Rosie lying on his feet, using its belly to warm them. My eyelids twitched. I hugged him into the blankets. He mumbled in his sleep, burrowing into my arms and grumbling softly.
The next morning, sure enough, the little rascal had a fever.
Not just him, even Rosie, who had been warming his feet the night before, was sick too. I called in sick for him and rushed to take both the boy and the dog to the hospital. Rosie had to stay a few extra days at the pet hospital, so I drove Luke home first.
On the way back, he suddenly shouted to stop the car. He struggled for quite a while before finally getting out of the child seat. He squatted beside the trash can and looked up at me.
"It looks like she's pregnant. Can we take her home?"
I stroked his nose, which had turned bright red from the cold, and his little face. I smiled and said, "Of course, we can."
I took off my coat and, together with him, we sent the pregnant cat to the pet hospital.
Luke asked, "Why don't we take her home? She won't fight with Rosie."
"The doctor needs to check if she and the babies are healthy. Wait until Saturday, and I'll take you to pick her up, along with Rosie, okay?"
He nodded heavily.
For the next two days, he was distracted by the situation. Saturday morning, he was fidgeting in bed, trying to wake me up. Reluctantly, I braved the morning chill and took him to pick up the cat and dog.
Rosie hadn't seen me in a while and eagerly nuzzled me when I got home.
But Luke, his attention was completely on the pregnant cat. He fed her cat treats and stroked her belly. Rosie got jealous and Janetted whining around the house.
