I had asked the housekeeper to leave early and began to knock on Luke's bedroom door.
"The housekeeper has left. If you're hungry, you can come out and open the door to eat."
After a long silence, the door opened slightly, and Luke peeked out, checking if the housekeeper had truly left before coming out. Rosie, wagging its tail, happily circled around him.
He tugged uncomfortably at his ill-fitting clothes, acting like a thief as he reached down to pat Rosie's head. Without thinking, he grabbed a cookie from the shopping bag and slipped it into his pocket. Since the housekeeper hadn't prepared lunch, we had decided to order from a restaurant for a meal together.
"Is she my mother?"
Luke suddenly asked, sitting across from me. Rosie, lying next to him, immediately barked at the question. Luke looked up at me and Jarrett with his big eyes. His long lashes and the baby fat still lingering on his face made him look like a sweet strawberry cake.
What Jarrett had said was true—Luke was quite adorable.
"Would you like to live with her?"
"You're lying!" Luke's eyes filled with tears as he spoke stubbornly. "My mom is already dead!" The mood at the dinner table shifted, becoming tense.
I calmly placed the peeled shrimp onto his plate.
"I'm not your mother. You can call me Jessica. Of course, if you'd like, you can call me mom."
"Just like the nanny, right?"
He smiled innocently, though there was a mischievous glint in his eyes.
"Not the same. I will live with you and help your dad raise you. The nanny wouldn't discipline you, but I will," I said. He blinked back a tear.
