Chapter 15

　　They called it a charity gala, but it was really just a bunch of businesspeople talking shop.
　　Feeling stifled, I went to the lakeside to get some air.
　　It was then that Elsa approached me, giving me a hateful look. "Katie, are you feeling smug now? Even though you've broken up with Cody, he still can't forget you, and I still can't be with him."
　　I replied calmly, "You guessed that? You really are smart."
　　I'm not a generous person.
　　Seeing a jerk suffer makes me happy, of course.
　　The pain I once endured, he should experience it too. That's only fair.
　　Elsa's tone turned hostile. "You won't be smug for long. I'll make Cody see your dark side and make him completely give up on you."
　　She glanced behind me and, without warning, grabbed my hand and pulled us both towards the lake.
　　She screamed, "No!"
　　In that instant, I understood her plan.
　　She wanted to frame me.
　　Elsa was betting that if Cody saw me pushing her into the lake, he would give up on me, the "vicious" woman, and feel pity for her.
　　Not only that, but she also wanted to drag me down with her, making me suffer the cold waters of winter as well.
　　As it turned out, her plan had flaws.
　　Evan, who had slipped away from the charity gala to find me, arrived just in time. He grabbed me by the waist, saving me from the danger of falling into the lake.
　　As for Elsa, she still held onto my hand, her body half-dangling over the edge of the lake.
　　Evan's narrowed eyes glinted as he kicked her straight into the lake.
　　His first priority was ensuring my safety.
　　"Katie, are you okay?"
　　I shook my head.
　　Cody arrived just in time to witness this dramatic scene.
　　Elsa flailed in the water, shouting, "Cody, help me! Katie is still holding a grudge over what happened before. She had Evan kick me into the lake!"
　　Evan stood in front of me, his face icy as he warned Cody, "Try laying a finger on Katie."
　　To my surprise, Cody didn't show any anger. Instead, he smiled and said, "Katie, I knew you still cared about me. Otherwise, you wouldn't have taught Elsa a lesson. Let's start over, okay?"
　　"There's really nothing between Elsa and me. I was confused before, unable to see my own feelings clearly, so I got close to her. But I never did anything to betray you."
　　"Ever since we broke up, I realized that the one I've always loved is you. I can't lose you."
　　Evan's gaze grew colder, a subtle mockery in his eyes as he looked at Cody.
　　As for me, I was completely stunned.
　　This turn of events was something I hadn't anticipated.
