Chapter 12

　　One rare day off, Evander wore gold-rimmed glasses, poring over a business proposal while I lay lazily across his lap, jotting notes on a script.
　　Suddenly, his phone rang.
　　The caller informed him that Lady Lonsdale had been hospitalized.
　　I was more anxious than him, leaping to my feet and urging him to go to the hospital.
　　Calmly, Evander closed his documents and sighed. "You stay here and rest. I'll go and be back soon."
　　His composure struck me as odd.
　　After some thought, I decided to follow him discreetly and took a taxi to the hospital.
　　Standing outside the room, I could hear the heated argument within.
　　"Mom, you use hospitalization as a threat every time. How long do you plan to keep this up?"
　　Lady Lonsdale retorted sharply, "I'm your mother. I'd never harm you. Evander, Joanna Sutherland isn't good enough for you. End things with her immediately!"
　　Selene's tearful voice joined in. "Evander, please listen to Lady Lonsdale. Don't upset her anymore..."
　　I sank to a crouch, thoughts swirling aimlessly.
　　Was this how it would end again?
　　The same conclusion?
　　Evander's voice was firm and resolute. "Mom, I love Joanna and will never let her go."
　　"You always taught me to fight for what I want. So why, now, are you asking me to compromise and give up? I'm your son, not your pawn."
　　Lady Lonsdale fell silent, unusually so. "I'm only doing this for your own good..."
　　Evander cut her off with a cold laugh. "If you truly want what's best for me, you should support my decision, not force me to conform to yours."
　　His tone softened. "Mom, this is the only love I'll ever have in this lifetime. I just want your blessing."
　　A long silence followed.
　　Finally, Lady Lonsdale relented. "You've grown up and can't be controlled anymore. Fine. Bring Joanna home someday. Your father should meet her."
　　The door opened.
　　Evander looked stunned to find me standing there.
　　I bit my lip and threw my arms around him tightly.
　　This time, nothing could stand between us.
