Whatever Evander said that evening must have worked. That night, Selene called me repeatedly, screaming hysterically.
"Joanna Sutherland, what did you say to him? How could he cut off all my resources and kick me out of the Lonsdale estate?"
"You were abroad. Why couldn't you just stay there forever? Why come back and ruin my life?"
It turned out that after Evander returned, he decisively severed all ties with Selene.
He clarified to everyone that Selene was merely the daughter of Lady Lonsdale's late benefactor, someone he'd always regarded as a sister.
The industry was as fickle as ever. Seeing Selene's downfall, those she had wronged over the years seized the chance to retaliate, kicking her while she was down.
Stripped of Evander's protection, she was nothing.
I frowned and hung up the phone, blocking her number that very night.
Unknown calls were never a good idea to answer—they either cost my money or ruined my mood.
When I returned to the set after recovering, I discovered that the actress playing the female lead's stepsister had been replaced.
Alaric was all smiles. "Mr. Lonsdale's decision is brilliant. Finally, we're free from Selene's antics."
The new actress was quiet and diligent. Upon meeting me, she immediately approached with her script, asking to rehearse together.
Her potential was clear. Though she appeared shy, she captured the villainess's arrogance and willfulness effortlessly on camera.
A scene that had taken all afternoon with Selene was completed in one take.
As soon as Alaric shouted cut, the young actress ran over, helping me up from the ground and apologizing profusely.
"Miss Sutherland, I'm so sorry! Thank you for your hard work!"
I shook my head with a smile. "It's okay. You did an amazing job."
The young actress blushed immediately, her face turning red with embarrassment.
The filming progressed smoothly.
Evander, under the pretense of worrying I couldn't take care of myself while juggling a hectic schedule, packed his bags and moved into my home.
Me: "..."
Looking at Evander's puppy-like eyes as he subtly begged for approval, I found myself agreeing without realizing it.
Ah, the power of charm.
Evander became increasingly clingy.
Before leaving the house, he would casually showcase the horn cufflink I had given him.
When he returned home, he'd wander into the kitchen, joining me in preparing simple pasta for a late-night snack.
On rainy days, he'd curl up with me on the couch to watch classic films.
If I suddenly wanted to explore a bustling night market, he'd accompany me all night, no matter his lack of interest.
I knew what he was doing. He was trying to tell me, in his own way:
I see everything you've done for me.
And I want to give that love back to you.
