Alaric called me. "Joanna, can you come back to the set for filming?"
I was about to agree, but after only a few steps, I stumbled.
Evander quickly carried me to the car. Taking off my shoe, he revealed an ankle already swollen and bruised.
I insisted I could keep going and told Alaric, "Let me put on some medicine. I'll be there in a moment."
I had never been the type to complain.
During years of working on web dramas, I'd fallen while suspended on wires, been injured filming action scenes, and sometimes continued even when the director insisted I take a break. Equipment was rented, and the student actors often couldn't come every day, so even a short delay could double the costs for the production.
In this cutthroat industry, my only choice was to give a hundred times the effort.
Unexpectedly, Evander snatched my phone. "Director Moreau, Joanna's twisted her ankle. Film another scene for now."
I stared at him wide-eyed, about to argue that I could manage.
Evander, however, held me down with one hand and pressed firmly on my bruised ankle with the other.
Pain brought tears to my eyes, making it impossible to speak.
Alaric, ever good-humored, replied easily, "Mr. Lonsdale's word is law. Besides, the actress you brought in, Selene, isn't in top form either. We'll adjust the schedule."
It was laughable.
Clearly, Alaric had a low opinion of Selene, ready to mock her whenever the opportunity arose.
My assistant brought some medicinal oil, her eyes red as she saw my bruised ankle. "That Selene, she really—"
She trailed off upon seeing Evander's face, visibly stunned.
Evander took the oil from her, warming it in his hands before applying it gently to my ankle. "Go on," he said calmly.
My assistant shot me a helpless look. I shook my head, signaling her to leave.
"It's nothing, really."
Evander's broad hands massaged my ankle, alternating pressure to disperse the blood clots.
I winced, stammering out an explanation of what had happened on set.
He listened attentively. When I finished, he wiped his hands clean and slipped my shoe back on.
"Don't worry. I'll handle it."
I nodded and threw myself into his arms, hugging him tightly. "Hold me."
It was something I'd wanted to do ever since returning home.
His warm, familiar embrace felt like it could absorb all my fears and guilt.
Evander froze, his hands hovering awkwardly, before he finally relaxed and patted my back with a soft laugh.
"Mm, you can hold me for the rest of your life."
