When we arrived, Evander's shirt was wrinkled from where I had leaned against him.
He remained motionless, watching me walk upstairs.
It wasn't until my apartment lights turned on that I heard the sound of his car engine starting.
On my phone, a message from Alaric waited quietly.
He wrote, "Joanna, the role of female lead in my film was practically made for you."
"Do you remember the orphanage? When you fought tooth and nail to retrieve my stolen sketchbook, even the headmistress couldn't stop you."
"You have the female lead's tenacity and unyielding spirit. No one could portray her better than you."
I typed and deleted several responses before finally sending a single word:
"Okay."
Alaric's instincts were sharp as ever.
The audition went smoothly. Even the critical assistant director and screenwriter nodded in approval.
The screenwriter, a lively young woman, practically sparkled as she grasped my hand. "Miss Sutherland, I never imagined you could bring the female lead to life so perfectly! I'm sorry for underestimating you before. I hope you won't hold it against me."
I understood their concerns.
After all, I hadn't acted in three years.
I ruffled her hair gently and smiled. "Thank you for the recognition. Looking forward to working together."
The female lead was the final role to be confirmed. The next day, we began shooting the costume tests.
That was the first time I met Selene.
She was undeniably beautiful, and her eyes bore a striking resemblance to mine. But unlike me, she was far more cheerful, flitting around the set like a sparrow and sweetly greeting everyone.
After washing my hands, I caught sight of her smug expression in the mirror.
Selene twirled the jade bracelet on her wrist, flaunting it. "Miss Sutherland, this was a gift from Evander."
I glanced at it briefly and continued drying my hands with indifference.
That seemed to frustrate her. She provocatively bumped into me.
"Miss Sutherland, why don't you guess—will you end up as tasteless meal or despised mosquito blood?"
I politely stepped away. "Miss Fairfax, I don't believe I'm obligated to entertain such a ridiculous question."
Annoyed, she kicked a trash can and blocked my path.
"Then let me just say this: Stay away from Evander. He may have driven you home last night, but don't get the wrong idea. He's kind to everyone, so don't go ruining someone else's relationship!"
Kind to everyone?
I remembered the first time he took me to a banquet. A wealthy heir had cornered me on the balcony while Evander was away, his words lewd and inappropriate.
That was the first time Evander publicly lost his temper.
He beat the man to a pulp, blood dripping from his split lip as he threatened, "Lay a finger on her again, and I'll make sure you regret it."
Meeting Selene's livid gaze, I smiled. "No need to remind me. I know my place."
Before leaving, I casually remarked, "By the way, that bracelet of yours has a pale undertone. It's likely a fake."
"Evander really should've been more careful when trying to please you."
Even through the closed door, I could hear her furious breathing and the sound of objects being thrown.
