The first time I met Kasey, I was only ten. I was in the yard, calling my friends over, when he stepped out of a car.
Because he lived next door to us, all of our attention was drawn to him.
When he got out, his clothes were torn and filthy, his long hair covering his eyes.
I was shocked just by seeing him from a distance.
He looked especially thin, his face pale as if he might collapse any second. That was my first impression of him. I seriously suspect his family sent him to some kind of reality show where spoiled kids are sent to tough environments to learn humility.
Otherwise, why hadn't I seen him before? And now, when he returned, he looked so miserable.
The kids started whispering, saying he looked like a beggar, that he dirtied the car with those rags. Some even yelled at him from across the yard.
I suddenly thought they were being rude. I got a little angry.
He looked over, and even though his hair covered his eyes, I knew he had definitely heard us.
I blinked and waved at him.
He looked a bit fierce.
But he didn't say anything. He wasn't angry. He was like a doll, letting others manipulate him. Then he walked away.
I suddenly didn't feel like playing Handkerchief anymore. I made up an excuse about not feeling well and sent my friends home. My mom said it was rude, but I did it anyway. I hated how they called him a beggar—it sounded awful.
---
Not long after, I saw him again. This time, things didn't look too good for him.
The kids who had insulted him were now surrounding him, punching and kicking him. They called him an unwanted child, a bastard.
He just squatted on the ground, not fighting back. His arms were already bruised.
I had never seen something like this before. I didn't know boys could be this scary.
I also didn't understand why he wouldn't fight back after being bullied. If it were me, I'd be yanking hair and biting back, fighting for my life.
"Hey, Chubbs."
They stopped, surprised by my voice. I clenched my hands behind my back.
"Jocelyn? Are you here to play with us?"The chubby boy, hearing me call him, grinned and walked toward me. Someone like Malik, who's usually so quiet and submissive at school, actually bullies people too.
I didn't understand.
I saw the boy behind them lift his head to look at me. His face was so pale it was frightening, and there was no light in his dark eyes.
He was staring at me, his expression indifferent.
Malik noticed I was looking at the boy who was getting beaten and explained to me:
"I suspect he stole my stuff. You don't know, but he's a bastard. His mom didn't want him, so she dumped him at the Kasey family and left. He used to be a beggar, begging for food somewhere. Hahaha."
When he said this, the kids around laughed along.
But I couldn't laugh.
