Years later, that night, Marie had a dream. In the dream, she was a young girl again.
Rebellious and flamboyant, a little naive, she saved a chubby boy with her bodyguard.
The boy was beaten black and blue, powerless to fight back. Those people had been making rude remarks, as if insulting his mother, calling her all kinds of terrible names.
"Stop! Let go of that chubby boy!" Her bodyguard rushed in.
The boy looked up at her with gratitude.
At that moment, she thought to herself, "I must look so cool."
She had no real friends, and when she sat on the rooftop with the chubby boy, they talked about everything. Even though the boy stuttered and couldn't express himself clearly.
He said he would get better after his surgery.
One time, when the woman used the excuse of her daughter being sick to call that man away again, she angrily said to the boy, "I hate all mistresses in this world."
"I also hate their children, the illegitimate ones. Their blood is tainted, disgusting."
"Don't you agree, buddy?"
The boy buried his head, not responding, and she didn't mind.
She had taken the boy in as her sidekick, intending for him to follow her, but her mother couldn't stand her actions and transferred her to another school.
Soon, she completely forgot about the chubby boy, even the words they had shared.
She vaguely wondered whether his mother had taken him for the surgery. She never heard him fully tell her his story.
She woke up, tears streaming down her face, feeling as if Lucian's features were a perfect replica of the chubby boy's from her past. She cried, apologizing.
Lucian stirred awake in a daze and responded to her kiss. After hearing about her dream, he gently rubbed her head.
"It's okay, my love. It's all in the past."
They needed to look forward.
He comforted Marie all night.
When Marie, her face stained with tears, fell asleep in his arms, he reached out and gently touched her nose. What mattered to him was never her words, but the years of insecurity that had plagued him, the insecurity that had kept him from even daring to come close.
