I went to meet Olivia.
It wasn't that I had gone to her voluntarily; I had exposed her tax issues through some connections, and now she was in a state of semi-blacklisting.
Her new drama couldn't air, and she was facing a hefty breach of contract fine, so she had no choice but to meet with me.
It was strange. My father, who dotes on her and protects her, had made sure she was supported in the entertainment industry. Yet when I went to take her down, my father didn't stop me.
"Marie, what exactly do you want?" Olivia's voice trembled, her whole body wrapped up tightly, leaving only her weary eyes visible.
Once the tax issue was exposed, her dirty laundry came pouring out, one after another. She must have been having a tough time lately.
"It should be me asking you that. What are you trying to do? Getting close to Lucian, do you really think I don't know your true intentions?"
You want resources, to help you become the leading actress—this is something my father could easily arrange for you.
But you chose Lucian instead.
Olivia bit her lip. "Why? We're both Dad's daughters. I was born as an illegitimate child, hidden away in the shadows, while you got all the love and attention, even this perfect marriage was meant for you first."
"Maybe you should ask your mother, or your father, shouldn't you?"
They could have divorced their previous marriages and started anew. They could have had everything in the open. Though saying that feels a bit heartless, I touched my nose, trying to soften the words.
"You don't like me, but I'm your sister, right? Dad always said we're family. But what about Lucian? He's also from an affair, his mother was a mistress. How come you can live happily with him?"
I stirred my coffee absently as I listened, remaining unaffected, "Don't bring up Lucian's mother to provoke me."
"She was deceived, abandoned everything when she realized she'd interfered in someone else's marriage, and went back to live in the countryside, living with guilt. What about your mother?"
I thought of Lucian's mother from my past life. If Lucian hadn't taken his own life, I might never have met her.
She was the same age as my mother but had rough, calloused fingers, a face marked by the years, and looked like an old woman.
Before all that, she had been an outstanding student with a bright future.
But because of a man, she had suffered online harassment and ended up living in the countryside.
"As for your claim that I don't like you... my sister."
I let out a cold laugh.
"I did have a real little sister."
"When you were sick as a child, your mother called that man several times, crying to make him leave, and then, my mother miscarried. It was a six-month-old baby girl."
"Olivia, how could you think I could ever like you?"
"Don't talk to me about family, or even friendship. We'll never be either."
"You just want someone to blame, but it's not my fault."
"If there's a next time, it won't just be about tax issues."
