"I… I don't want a divorce."
He almost stumbled as he tried to get off the bed, his eyes red as he grabbed the hem of my clothes, his voice filled with desperation. Without a second thought, he yanked the IV out, disregarding his own body completely.
I furrowed my brows in frustration.
"Lucian, if you can't even take care of yourself, how will you ever be a good father?"
His eyes suddenly brightened as he looked at my flat stomach with a look of longing.
"Don't look at it. I'm not pregnant."
It had only been a day—there's no way it would show so soon.
"You're hurting yourself, trying to take your life, being reckless with your own well-being. How can you be responsible for me, for our future children?"
Truthfully, we hadn't been competent parents in our past life.
"Lucian, I really want to live a good life with you. As you can see, I've never liked any man before, and I have no idea how to please one. I always end up making a mess of things."
"But you're special to me, not just because you're my husband."
I squatted down and gently cupped his tear-streaked face. "So tell me, what are you so afraid of? Why would you try to kill yourself as soon as Olivia leaves?"
Why did he always think that I hated him?
In panic, he grabbed my hand and pressed it to his face. "Marie… no, we're not getting a divorce.."
I wiped away his tears, sighing in frustration. "I'm your wife. What can't you tell me? Why is it that even Olivia, an outsider, knows things I don't?"
"Lucian, this makes me feel like you don't respect me."
Lucian swallowed hard, nervously raising his eyes to meet mine, as though what he was about to say was difficult to express, "I... I'm like her. I'm the result of an affair."
So what?
"Is that the reason?"
He buried his head even lower, his voice barely a whisper, "You... you don't like her because she's not exactly the 'legitimate one.'"
"I don't dislike her. What does that have to do with you? Just because of that, you think I hate all children born from affairs?"
In that moment, something clicked in my mind.
"Olivia never told you, did she? She's my half-sister."
"Do you think I could like the daughter of a woman who hurt my mother?" Forget disliking her; I would rather not have anything to do with her at all.
Lucian's eyes widened in shock as he looked at me.
I gently helped him back onto the hospital bed and pressed a soft kiss to his lips. "Tell me, what else did Olivia say to you?"
