I gently patted her back while explaining:
"Mom, you understand your daughter! Just think about it—if you go in and accidentally reveal everything, what if he gets mad?"
My mom stared at me for a while, then said, "Why are you just like your dad, all obsessed with love?"
"Eleanor," she grinned like a fox, "Did you think I was going to show our mother-child relationship?"
"Isn't that what you were planning?"
She snorted, took a large bunch of keys out of her bag, and waved them in front of my eyes proudly.
"I came to collect rent! Oh, I forgot to tell you, the house you're renting is actually our own."
I: "?"
Wait, I'd been struggling to pay three months' rent in advance, and now my mom tells me I'm renting from our own family?
"Mom, is this even polite?"
I finally understood why when I left home, my dad's cryptic remark made sense:
"Honey, you're too young to get why even the most powerful people can't always overcome the things that hold them back."
This wasn't about not being able to escape—it was more like I'd jumped out of one pit, only to fall into another.
At this point, I grabbed my mom's hand and whined, "Mom, can I please..."
"No!"
"I wasn't done yet."
"I know what you're going to say, rent-free? No way!"
I: "..."
Only a mom would shut down that quickly.
I was afraid Josh would get suspicious waiting inside, so I quickly sent my mom off and rushed back.
When Josh heard the door opening, he immediately came to the doorway, asking anxiously, "What happened? Did you two have a fight?"
I smiled and waved my hand, "No, everything's fine with that lady!"
Josh was still a bit skeptical: "Then who is she?"
I glanced around, not daring to meet his eyes:
"She was asking me for a good review..."
It had been so long since I'd had a meal made by the chef at home, I was too busy digging in to pay attention to what he was saying.
...
Josh was so good to me, I couldn't treat him badly, could I?
Over the weekend, I tried making sushi at home with the recipe the chef gave me. After so many failed tries, I finally got it right.
On Monday, during my lunch break, I decided to surprise Josh.
I called him after I arrived at the construction site:
"Darling, guess where I am?"
The machines were buzzing in the construction site, but oddly, the background noise on the phone was unusually quiet.
I looked up at the 26th floor where workers were busy. It seemed like the size of a football from where I stood.
Sigh! Construction workers have it so tough.
"Eleanor, where are you?"
Josh's voice was deep and magnetic, sending a shiver down my spine.
"I'm outside your construction site bringing you lunch." I added thoughtfully, "I know you're working on the top floor, so don't worry about coming down. I can wait."
