"So, I've given you the money. Can I take my daughter-in-law now?"
The country woman rubbed her hands together, her eyes gleaming as she looked at me like I was merchandise.
My dad gave me a casual glance, then waved dismissively, "Alright, Genesis, pack your things and go back to the countryside with her."
Evelin glanced at me smugly. "You better hurry up and follow your future mother-in-law. Don't ever come back. We don't want any poor relatives like you in this house."
I laughed bitterly. "I don't know her son, I'm not pregnant, and I certainly didn't take the money. Why should I marry him?"
The woman immediately dropped to the ground, rolling around and crying out.
"You shameless tramp! You got my son pregnant and still won't marry him? My poor grandbaby is out there all alone!"
"I know you think our family is poor, but we spent over one hundred thousand just to marry you! Do you know how many pigs that could buy in the countryside?"
"If you don't come with me today, I'll stay right here."
Typical shrewish behavior. My classmates were stifling their laughs, pointing and whispering.
I casually took out a medical report from my pocket and handed it to the woman.
"This is the checkup I had at the hospital. It clearly states that I have gastroenteritis, not pregnancy."
I then pointed to my waist. "A three-month pregnancy belly wouldn't look like this."
This slim waist? All thanks to my daily yoga practice.
The aunt was stunned for a moment. Having had children herself, she recognized the signs of pregnancy.
I continued, "You should know very well that spreading false rumors is a crime. While it might not land you in prison for years, a month behind bars is definitely possible."
The aunt quickly cowered, scrambling up from the ground and wiping away her tears. "What should I do then?"
I pointed at the money bag. "Take the money back with you, and we'll pretend this never happened. Otherwise, I'll call the police."
The aunt was scared. She went to grab the money, intending to leave.
But Genesis wasn't going to let her take the money so easily. She clutched the bag tightly, glaring at me and shouting:
"Even if you're not pregnant, your reputation's already shot. No good family will want you now."
My mom chimed in from the side, "That's right. Genesis, don't be so unreasonable. She's going to marry someone from a wealthy, powerful family, and without any financial support from her family, she might be looked down on."
I shrugged, uninterested. "Things have already reached this point, so I'll just file a report with the police. Whoever spread the rumors will have to take responsibility."
The aunt immediately distanced herself, "It was all Genesis who said it! She said you were pregnant with my grandson and told me to hurry and propose."
Genesis arrogantly declared, "I was just joking back then, but now I'm carrying the heir of the Ritter family. Power comes with the child. What can you do about it?"
My dad nodded in agreement, "Exactly! Now that Genesis is carrying our future, you need to stop causing trouble, Genesis!"
I sneered, folding my arms. "And why should I?"
Publicly contradicted, my dad angrily shouted, "Because you're my daughter! You'll marry whoever I say you will!"
I raised my thumb. "Right, because that's how it works in your world, huh?"
My dad's face turned red with anger, and he raised his hand, clearly intending to slap me.
I could feel the force of his slap just from the sound of the air.
Genesis's face was filled with malicious glee.
Just as I was preparing to tilt away to dodge the slap, a cold, authoritative voice rang out from the doorway: "Stop!"
