He slept for a long time before waking up. His pale face slowly opened his eyes, his voice hoarse: "Brooks, don't cry."
He reached out and wiped away the tear from the corner of my eye.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have lied to you..."
"Brooks, can you keep the baby? I've asked the doctor, my illness may not be hereditary. Even if it is, a surgery when he's young can fix it."
"Trust me, I'll be a good father."
Alden held my hand, his voice filled with pleading.
"How can you be a good father when you don't even have a healthy body?"
My eyes red, I stared directly at Alden.
"Alden, five years ago, you asked me if I had ever loved you. That question has haunted me like a nightmare. I kept telling myself I hated you, that I didn't like you at all."
"But do you know? You almost scared me to death. What if you had died? What would I have done..."
"Alden, it's not that I don't care about you. It's just that I've been denying it, I've never dared to admit it..."
Alden stared at me in a daze, trembling as he spoke:
"Brooks, you're lying to me again."
I sniffled and met his gaze.
"I'm not lying to you. The doctor said the baby is fine. Right now, it's only the size of a soybean. If you cooperate with the surgery, it'll be okay. I asked, the risk isn't that high."
I couldn't help but glare at him, threatening him:
"I'm telling you, I'm not becoming a widow. If you die, I'll take your inheritance and your child, and marry someone else. Your child will call another man 'Dad.'"
"Fine."
He smiled helplessly in the end.
