Alden was really waiting for me to finish work in the reception room, and people passing by couldn't help but gossip.
Even Secretary Phelps couldn't resist asking me, "Ms. Velez, what's going on between you and Alden?"
I motioned for him to speak directly.
"Well, he's Mary's son. I thought your relationship with him was bad, but today at the board meeting, he actually stood by your side. It's quite surprising…"
I gave a vague smile. "Our relationship is indeed quite bad, but it's not as bad as you think…"
"In that case, maybe you could bring up the City Square project bidding with him?"
Secretary Phelps seemed a bit excited, as if he could already see piles of money floating toward us.
"You think Alden is someone who can be easily swayed?"
Secretary Phelps deflated immediately. "True, he's young, but he's already quite mature for his age. I remember many people used to look down on him, calling him the son of a mistress, saying he couldn't cause any waves. Who would have thought he's a financial genius? In just two years of investment, he used high leverage and earned a fortune, making everyone jealous."
"While others were still hesitating, he turned to real estate. In just a few years, his companies have outpaced the old established ones."
This was the first time I heard someone else describe Alden, from a youthful prodigy to a business elite.
He was always so outstanding.
So, five years ago, when I overheard a conversation between Mary and my father, I panicked.
She said, "I don't think Mia has much ability, and as a girl, she'll get married sooner or later. Alden is so talented, let's just have him come to the company after graduation. That way, we can relax a little."
So, that year, it was all just a play I put on. I deliberately staged a scene where Alden assaulted me, hoping my father would despise both him and his mother.
