I don't know how long I had slept, but the sleep felt unusually long. It was Alden who woke me up:
"Brooks, get up and eat something before going back to sleep."
Ever since my mom passed away, I had developed sleep disorders, and my sleep had become very light. I must have been so exhausted last night that I didn't wake up until 1 p.m.
I rubbed my still dizzy head, and Alden stood by the bed, dressed in beige loungewear.
His shirt from yesterday was somehow on me now.
I scanned the room but couldn't find my own clothes anywhere.
"I… where's my clothes?"
The words came out hoarsely.
I cleared my throat, uncomfortable, and Alden handed me a glass of water:
"I washed them."
After drinking the water, my throat felt a little better:
"What should I wear then?"
He nodded toward the wardrobe: "Pick something."
I pushed through the discomfort and got out of bed to open the wardrobe.
Inside were all kinds of women's clothes, all in styles I liked.
Even the sleepwear and intimate garments were neatly arranged.
I didn't know when Alden had prepared these clothes. It seemed like he had been planning this all along, waiting for me to walk right into his trap.
I changed into a business casual outfit, and noticed a few unread messages on my phone.
The most important one was from Secretary Phelps, informing me that Alden's one hundred million had been transferred.
I replied: "Prepare for the afternoon meeting."
After washing up, I found that Alden had also changed into a suit.
"Come help me tie my tie," he called out to me.
The tie he was wearing was the one from yesterday.
"Use a new one…" I reminded him.
"I don't have one," he replied indifferently.
I was momentarily speechless but explained, "I don't know how to tie it."
He sighed and, with a practiced hand, tied it for me, his gaze on me:
"Did you learn?"
I nodded blankly, but to my surprise, he untied it again and pointed at the tie: "Go ahead, try it."
I: "…"
After thinking about the one hundred million, I gave in.
After some effort, I looked at my handiwork—my tie looked like something a child would make for a school project, so ugly it was hard to look at…
"Is this it?" he said leisurely, his voice tinged with mockery.
"I told you I don't know how…"
"Try again."
In the end, it was still terribly done.
Never mind, it's not like I'm the one embarrassed, I thought quietly.
At the dining table were all my favorite dishes. Alden took a glass of water and swallowed two pills. It seemed like his stomach problems hadn't healed yet.
He glanced at his watch:
"Leave the dishes, I'll clean up. If you're tired, go back to sleep. I'll pick you up after work."
For a moment, I was dazed. Alden's sudden gentleness left me unsure of what to do:
"I'm going to the office this afternoon…"
"Oh, I'll pick you up from work then."
I gripped my chopsticks tightly, a wave of inexplicable discomfort rising in my chest.
Am I now his… lover?
"The E City project isn't as simple as you think. You think throwing in a hundred million will fix it?"
"Then why do you still…"
"If we win, it's yours. If we lose, it's mine."
He adjusted his tie with a look of disdain and his eyes turned to me:
"Do you want to win?"
Of course I do. The company had once been my mother's lifeblood. After giving birth to me, she focused entirely on raising a family, which ultimately led to her tragic fate.
"There's a social event tonight. I'll introduce you to a few people. It'll make the project run more smoothly."
