For the next few days, I was buried in work.
Alexander would sometimes video call me, but I was always too busy to answer.
By the time I finished working, it was already his bedtime.
Doctors work so hard, I just wanted him to get enough sleep, so I didn't want to bother him.
We were basically out of touch during this period.
The two weeks of my business trip suddenly turned into a much longer stretch.
The client was overly polite and tough in contract negotiations, nothing was getting through.
Alexander couldn't wait any longer.
When I finally answered his video call, he had already landed in the city I was in for my business trip!
I put down my work and went to meet him.
"How did you manage to come here with your busy schedule?"
He smiled helplessly. "You must have lost track of time. The new year is almost here, so I came to pick you up and take you home for the holidays."
I suddenly realized the year was almost over.
I don't usually pay attention to the calendar, so the date didn't matter much to me.
"So how much holiday do you have this year?" I asked.
He wrapped his hand around mine and placed it in his coat pocket.
"Don't worry, I have half a month off."
I was confused. "Huh? I thought you only got a week?"
He smiled. "My professor asked me to mentor my junior, so I handed over everything to her. Including the on-call shifts."
That was a relief.
"Your professor won't say anything?"
"Oh, he did. He said the junior has too much pride, so it's good for her to do such minor tasks to humble herself."
I chuckled. My professor certainly knew his students well.
