Looking back now, agreeing to this marriage was partly out of spite.
"But…" Mckayla still wanted to say something but was interrupted by John's voice.
"Zoe!" His voice suddenly cut through, like the most effective sedative, pulling me back from my memories to reality.
Grandfather was right. Maybe it was because of his privileged family background, or maybe it was because of his confidence, but John gave a strong sense of security.
He walked up to me, took my hand, and said, "Let's go home."
"I'm leaving." I turned to Mckayla and said, "Anyway, it's his money, so let's consider this necklace as a gift from him to Celia."
I didn't want to be associated with them anymore.
If we're going to cut ties, it should be final and without any mess.
…
"What's going on? You look so happy!" John asked.
"Nothing, just that my grandparents have good taste after all."
John didn't ask more, only smiled at me.
I forced myself not to look at John's smile and asked him, "What about you? Why are you so happy?"
"Because you're by my side."
His words were casual as if he hadn't even thought about it before speaking.
My heart skipped a beat.
I looked out the car window at the sky. There were no stars in the night, and the moon was hidden behind the clouds. Everything seemed to say, "Tonight is not a good time for business."
But this matter couldn't be avoided, so I finally spoke up: "John, if I said our marriage was based solely on the interests of both families and a bit of spite, with the added convenience of being closer to your brother, what would you think?"
"I would think I'm very lucky." He said it confidently, as if certain, "Because only I meet all three conditions. I'm lucky that I have the ability to be your best choice."
