On the eighth year of my plan to win over Valentine, his affection finally reached the maximum.
I stared absentmindedly at the progress bar above his head and at the young man in front of me, still cold and expressionless, unable to shake off the haze in my mind.
Full... what did that kind of love even mean?
"Valentine."
I poked the flesh of his arm. "What are your plans after graduation? Where do you intend to work?"
"Windhurst."
He said succinctly, "They just sent me an offer."
Windhurst, the most famous game development company in the country, had targeted him ever since his college years, and now it seemed they had finally achieved their goal.
"And you?"
He casually asked, "What are your plans? It feels like you haven't really been looking for a job."
I lowered my head, avoiding his gaze. "Of course I'll find something here. You're here, where else could I go?"
Valentine smiled, his smile fleeting. I couldn't quite make it out.
---
The system said that Valentine was the kind of sickly, twisted individual who would imprison the female lead in a basement and keep her as a pet.
My task was to make him like me, to make him feel love, to redeem his otherwise lonely and bleak life.
Now that he loved me...
I could leave.
Before I left, I thought for a moment and anonymously sent an email to the head of the Ashford family in the capital.
Inside was the paternity test report between Valentine and his biological father, something I had the system create.
In the original story, Valentine was only reunited with his real father after enduring hardships and founding his own business.
Now, even this was my gift to him.
"Actually, I don't understand you all."
I said to the system:
"Only when he loves me am I allowed to leave. The three great sufferings of life: the pain of separation, the hatred of powerlessness, the yearning that can't be fulfilled. I've experienced them all."
"Do you want to save him, or do you want to push him further into the abyss?"
The system chuckled, the sound of crackling electricity followed:
"You can choose not to go back. Would you?"
I fell silent.
Of course, I didn't want to.
