His name was Xavier Ravencraft.
This young man and I chatted over meals and learned that, like me, he had recently lost his only family.
"My parents died in a car accident when I was three. My grandmother raised me." He said, "Irene, actually, we're very similar."
Two lonely people, clinging to each other to keep warm during the hardest times. Christmas here was grand.
I was invited by Xavier to the square. As I looked through the bustling crowd, I couldn't see him.
Just as I was about to call, I saw a Santa Claus approaching, dressed in the traditional costume, holding a bunch of balloons.
He came up, grabbed my hand, and pushed the balloons into my arms.
"Do you know? My grandmother told me that if you let go of the balloons, your worries and sadness will fly away with them."
"Let's let them go together, Irene."
Xavier's gentle voice, muffled through the costume, reached my ears. "From now on, let's not be sad anymore."
Under the sky full of balloons, I looked at the boy's clear eyes through the costume. Suddenly, tears welled up and I couldn't stop them.
The tears flowed like a switch had been flipped.
"Thank you."
I hugged Xavier's shoulder.
Every time I feel sad, I will think of this day.
A pure boy, with a passionate heart, let go of a sky full of balloons for me on Christmas night.
This Christmas night was beautiful.
If only Thaddeus hadn't appeared in the end.
He was leaning against a luxury car, watching me as I was sent back by Xavier. His face looked indifferent. I ignored him and quietly said goodbye to Xavier.
After Xavier left, I turned to Thaddeus, "What are you doing here?"
"I missed you, so I came to see you."
He pulled out a baked potato wrapped in foil from the car, unwrapping it, steam rising from it.
"I was worried you wouldn't be used to the food here, so I bought this for you. Want to try a bite?" I didn't take it, just quietly watched Thaddeus's face.
It had been months since I last saw him, and he seemed to have lost some weight. His eyes were a bit bloodshot, and there were dark circles under them.
I never asked him how he knew where I lived. I knew he had people watching me.
I also knew that from the beginning, I had never truly escaped from him.
"Come upstairs with me."
I said, "I want to tell you something too."
