It was Sebastian's ex-fiancée, Vivia Rose, now married to his younger brother.
She wore a deep blue gown and high heels, walking in. When she saw me sitting next to Sebastian, a flicker of disdain flashed in her eyes.
"Is this Miss Nightingale, the one who saved you?"
She smiled at me warmly, "Thank you so much for helping Seb. If you ever need anything from the Delacroix family, don't hesitate to ask..."
"Enough."
Sebastian gripped my hand, his cold gaze fixed on her.
"What are you here for?"
Vivia's face turned pale. "Seb, are you blaming me? At that time... I was forced into it."
A few tears ran down her face, making me uncomfortable. I withdrew my hand from Sebastian and quietly said to him.
"I'll go out for a moment."
"No need."
Sebastian gripped my hand more tightly.
"The one who should leave isn't you."
---
The coldness Sebastian showed toward Vivia was chilling. All the sweet words from before, from the news reports, now seemed like lies in my memory.
Vivia was sent away. The next day, I received a call from my father.
He was excited. "Anastasia, you've gotten close to Mr. Delacroix?"
"You have to try to get pregnant with his child, then no matter what..."
I hung up the phone, rubbing my forehead in frustration.
Sebastian came over, good-natured, and handed me a glass of milk.
"Who was that?"
"My dad. He must've found out about you and me somehow. He's asking me what's going on."
"What did your father say?"
"Nothing serious."
"Really?"
He smiled slightly, his gaze lowering.
"He told you to try to marry me, how is that not serious?"
---
I was a bit surprised. "How did you know?"
"It's not important."
He sat beside me, holding my fingers and gently rubbing them.
"The important thing is, what do you think about marrying me?"
I didn't answer.
Sebastian's eyes flickered.
"Don't tell me you came all the way back from abroad just to do charity work."
"...That's not quite it."
I slowly moved back, avoiding his touch.
"But I'm not doing this for some kind of payback... I'm helping you because you're a good person."
Sebastian was stunned for a moment. After a long pause, he softly asked, "So?"
"I don't want to marry you."
I finally got to the point.
Sebastian's expression became complicated. He pressed his fingers into his palm and looked at me helplessly.
"I thought you were helping me because you felt something different for me."
"Looks like I was just being overly sentimental."
His gaze fell on me, faint and shallow: "Anastasia, do you want something else as a reward?"
---
"Give me money."
I said softly, "Actually, when I helped you, I didn't expect any return."
"Even if I wasn't here, you would have eventually gotten through it yourself."
Sebastian smiled faintly, not responding to my words. Instead, he changed the topic and asked me:
"Is it because you have someone you like that you don't want to marry me?"
"...I have a crush on someone, but he's abroad."
I told the truth: "But that has nothing to do with me not wanting to marry you."
I coughed lightly.
"Actually, I'm curious, why would you want to marry me? Because I helped you?"
"There are countless ways to repay me, and romance is the worst choice. We could end up with conflicting values and become enemies."
"I'm helping you because you're a good person. We can be friends in the future."
I spoke earnestly, and Sebastian listened seriously.
His gaze lingered on me for a long time, before he sighed lightly.
"Then as you wish, Anastasia."
"Although... I don't agree with your view."
