After we got home, Icarus put Ismael to bed and then came back to the study where I was lost in thought.
He lifted me up and sat me on his lap, then said quietly, "At the time, you didn't want him. But my mom force you..."
I blinked. "Your mom?"
"Yeah."
Icarus seemed a little sad, burying his face in my neck. His voice was muffled as he spoke, "My mom was diagnosed with cancer, and it was serious. When she heard you were pregnant, she insisted you keep the baby. She wanted to see the next generation..."
He came from a single-parent family.
His mother had raised him alone, enduring a lot to get him to adulthood. After all that hardship, she was diagnosed with a disease no one could accept.
I stayed silent for a moment. "So, you helped your mom pressure me into having this baby, right?"
Icarus didn't answer.
He cried.
Tears soaked into my collar, warm and numbing, accompanied by his choked sobs and the murmurs of "I'm sorry."
He said, "If I knew that having this child would make you hate me, I would have never let it happen... I'm sorry."
At twenty-six, the best time of my life, with my career and future looking bright, suddenly interrupted by a child.
I guess I could never learn to love this child—or the husband who made me have him.
Then I suddenly remembered something.
"Icarus, do I have a job now?"
