Alina White had always been the true daughter of the White family. Before returning home, she had lived in constant fear that her family would favor the impostor who had grown up in her place.
But her worries were unfounded.
The moment she came back, her family drove the impostor out, arranged an excellent match for her, and lavished her with unconditional love.
Her joy was short-lived. She soon discovered her fiancé was the impostor's ex-boyfriend.
To prove his loyalty, he ordered the impostor to be dragged before her.
"How should we deal with her?" he asked.
Delighted but feigning fear, Alina whispered, "I don't want to see her again."
Her fiancé understood. "Then let's make her disappear."
The woman who had once been both his ex-girlfriend and the fake heiress was dead.
Just as she was about to start a new chapter of her life, she was thrown into the sea and left for the fish.
That was my previous life.
---
My rebirth was poorly timed.
I had just helped Ethan's mother find a doctor. Overjoyed, he had taken me to bed.
The once-faded white shirt of a struggling boy lay crumpled on the floor, his pale face flushed with color. Even as he slept, he instinctively sought me out, wrapping me in his arms.
I pushed him away, my bare feet hitting the cold ground. Looking around the cramped apartment, its air thick with the stench of mildew, I noted the absence of a single window and the impossibility of even smoking a cigarette in peace.
With a detached expression, I glanced at my phone.
It was filled with large transfers from my brother and mother.
"Darling, don't compromise your happiness."
Lowering my head, I let my mind drift. After a long pause, I turned off the phone.
I crouched on the floor, lost in thought, when a warm breath brushed against my neck.
Ethan wrapped his arms around me, his head nuzzling my shoulder as he murmured, "Why are you up so early?"
"It's nothing," I replied softly. "Let's go check on your mom at the hospital."
Ethan turned and began packing his things.
I stared at his retreating figure, instinctively reaching into my pocket for a cigarette, only to come up empty.
In my previous life, I was infatuated with his good looks, clinging to him relentlessly. I stayed in that cramped rental with him, even finding the best doctor for his mother's surgery.
But later, when he captured me for Alina White, he sneered coldly.
"Estelle White, you didn't think I was touched back then, did you?"
"No, your charity, your pity, even your transactions in bed disgusted me to the point of nausea."
...
"Ethan Caldwell," I spoke up, "do you find being with me disgusting?"
"Why would I?" He seemed genuinely taken aback. "Baby, why would you think that?"
"You're so sweet, so beautiful. How could I ever..."
His ears turned red, his sincerity almost tangible, his eyes like liquid glass as they fixed on me.
What a performer...
I smiled faintly. "It's nothing."
