When I took Quentin's hand and returned to the Hawthorne estate, his parents had prepared a lavish feast.
At the table, they cautiously asked when we planned to marry.
For a moment, I was transported back several years.
Back when my brother had cast me out, leaving me with nothing, I lived in the Hawthorne household, constantly on edge.
His parents, his sister, even the servants treated me with disdain, casually showing their contempt. Though Quentin shielded me, I couldn't avoid the subtle humiliations.
At the time, the Hawthorne family assumed my marriage to Quentin was a foregone conclusion, never considering the possibility that I might refuse.
Now, they carefully asked if I was willing to marry him.
Back then, marrying Quentin would have been a step up for me.
Now, marrying into the Hawthorne family was their privilege.
Years of effort had given me the confidence to stand tall. I finally had something that was truly mine.
Watching Quentin's sister, who even during arguments restrained herself and could only let loose in her own home, I smiled faintly.
"That's fine," I said. "I'd actually love to have a wedding."
Later that night, Quentin held me close, his voice soft as he spoke. "Today, I realized that maybe the way you are isn't so bad."
"Why?" I asked.
"I can see how happy you are. My parents don't dare underestimate you anymore. They value you even more than they value me." He sighed. "I never understood before. I gave you everything you wanted, so why did you work so hard?
"Now I realize there are things I can never give you. Some things you have to earn for yourself."
He brushed a hand over my hair, his tone filled with admiration.
"Stella, you're incredible."
