Quentin slammed the door as he left.
I sat on the floor, hugging my knees, my mind filled with the image of his reddened eyes and deeply disappointed expression.
But some things had been bottled up inside me for too long, and they had to come out eventually.
Every time Quentin hesitated before speaking, I'd wonder if he was trying to get me to give up, if he was deliberately setting traps for me.
I knew he loved me, knew he wasn't the type for petty schemes, but I couldn't help but be wary, couldn't stop imagining the worst.
Getting here had been too hard for me.
What started as a vague desire had become a goal I couldn't afford to fail.
I wouldn't let anyone stand in my way.
Maybe it was for the best...
My position in the Montgomery Company was solid, and I no longer needed the Hawthorne family's support. It would be inconvenient, but manageable.
At least this way, I wouldn't have to constantly consider his feelings, wouldn't have to stay up late texting him when I was already exhausted, wouldn't have to second-guess everything to avoid upsetting him.
My head felt foggy. I touched my cheek and realized it was wet.
Had I been crying?
Why?
It must have been dust in my eyes.
