In traditional families like the Hawthornes, women rarely played roles in the family business.
Quentin's sister had married last year, to a tech leader at an up-and-coming internet firm, a union that pleased both sides.
When Quentin first helped me, it was out of amusement, never expecting things to go this far.
Deep down, he still believed women should be like his sister—kept at home, away from the storms and dealings of men.
"So, that's how you've always seen me."
Quentin stared at me in disbelief.
"I've done so much for you, put up with so much, and yet you think I look down on you..."
"Isn't that true?" I retorted, coldly meeting his gaze.
Quentin had stepped forward, intending to hold me, but my glare stopped him in his tracks. His body stiffened, and his face turned pale.
He was clearly angry.
"I've been like a dog in front of you," he began, his voice trembling with restrained fury. "Whatever you wanted, I gave. Whatever you wanted to do, I helped, never saying a word more than necessary.
"I just wanted a little comfort because I was jealous, and all I got was a lecture full of principles.
"You call me a hypocrite, say I look down on you, and accuse me of disrespect..."
As he spoke, he clutched at his chest, his voice becoming raspy, as if he were choking on his emotions.
"I noticed it long ago," he continued. "In business, in partnerships, I told you everything, but you guarded against me at every turn, as if I'd set a trap to take advantage of you."
"Let's be honest, Stella. You just don't love me enough."
"No matter what I do, you don't love me."
It seemed he had finally reached his breaking point. His eyes turned red as he covered them with one hand.
"I get tired, too, Stella. I get sad."
"From now on, your business is your own. The engagement is off. We're... done."
