He was out of his mind.
I shoved Quentin's hands off me, taking two steps back to glare at him.
"You've never entertained anyone? Never had female companions for appearances?"
"You're more familiar with those scenarios than I am. Don't you understand why I had to do that?"
Seeing him about to argue, I cut him off.
"Don't lie to me, Quentin."
"Over the years, how many women have been around you? How many different dates at banquets? Do you think I don't know?"
"Can you honestly say you've never drunk the drinks they offered? Never held their hands? Never linked arms with them?"
"Why is it okay for you, but the moment I do it, I'm unfaithful and deserving of your accusations?"
Taking a deep breath, I straightened up, meeting his gaze coldly.
"If you want a wife who waits at home for you every day, then I'm sorry. That's not me, and it never will be. If you try to make me into that, I'll fight you to the end."
Watching his frosty expression, I couldn't help but laugh bitterly, leaning against the wall for support.
"You were born an heir, just like my brother. You'll never understand what I've sacrificed to get here."
"You can skip work and abandon million-dollar projects without a second thought. Everywhere you go, people flatter and respect you."
"Everything you want comes easily. But what about me?"
My eyes reddened, though I still wore a faint smile. Slowly, I asked:
"Do you know how hard, how exhausting, how impossible it's been for me to get to where I am? Do you know how much I treasure what I've achieved?"
I closed my eyes abruptly.
Tears threatened to fall but remained trapped, their path unclear.
When I opened them again, Quentin was reaching out tentatively to touch my hand.
I pulled away.
"You're just like my brother," I said, my voice tinged with a nasal tone but calm.
"The only difference is that he's foolish, incapable of causing much damage."
"And you—"
A bitter smile crossed my face.
"Admit it, Quentin. You've never truly respected me."
