My brother began to fear me, but he couldn't quell the dissent among his subordinates.
I rapidly climbed the ranks, aided by the others with ulterior motives, and entered management, securing multiple projects. My reputation and influence grew swiftly.
However, spending more time at the office meant more encounters with Blanche.
One day, she came to deliver lunch to my brother just as my proposal had been rejected. My brother, deliberately enraged, threw the thick stack of A4 papers at my head. The papers scattered, leaving me in a humiliating mess.
Blanche smirked smugly, standing behind him, playing the peacemaker.
"Miss Montgomery knows she was wrong. Master Montgomery, you're like a father figure to her. Don't hold it against her."
My brother glared at me. "If she could be as obedient as you, I wouldn't have to worry so much."
"Calm down," Blanche said sweetly. "It's not worth getting upset. I brought food; Miss Montgomery, would you like to join us?"
"No, thank you."
I'd had enough.
Looking directly at my brother, I said bluntly, "Like her? Watching you ruin the company while the whole family starves?
"If you're incompetent, admit it. Why pretend to be some elite, only to find validation in women's submission?"
"You—"
He was livid and raised his hand to strike me.
I didn't even bother to dodge. Instead, I leaned closer. "Go ahead, hit me. Do you have the guts?
"Do you even dare face the consequences of hitting me now?"
His hand trembled, pointing at me in shock and anger.
This was the first time I openly clashed with him.
But he didn't dare lay a hand on me. With the Hawthorne family, my team, and my supporters backing me, any scandal would peel away his dignity.
Smiling faintly at his cowardice, I said, "Well? No? Then I'll leave."
Slowly, I bent down to pick up the scattered papers. Glancing at Blanche, whose face twisted in disbelief, I smirked and walked out, my heels clicking against the floor.
