I had grown up abroad and only returned to the country after my parents' car accident.
Blanche, having been raised alongside them, naturally shared a closer bond. I tried to comfort myself with this thought.
That evening, I cooked dinner myself and, during the meal, used communal utensils to serve my eldest brother a roasted chicken wing.
"I made this myself. Please try it."
He barely concealed a frown.
At the time, I didn't understand what that meant.
After dinner, Blanche stopped me in the kitchen.
"Miss, he doesn't like eating food served by others. Please don't serve him next time; he won't eat it."
I didn't think much of it. "I'll remember that."
Her eyes gleamed with a hint of triumph as she added, "Generally, they only eat what I serve them. They can't even eat without me by their side.
"Don't take it to heart. After all, compared to you, they're still closer to me."
I gave her a glance but said nothing.
Taking a cup of yogurt, I returned to my room, loosened my hair, and sprawled on the bed to check the messages from Quentin Hawthorne.
---
I had returned to the country for one reason: marriage.
The engagement had been arranged by my parents with Quentin, someone I'd studied abroad with.
We'd never gotten along, always bickering whenever we met, but he was unusually keen on the marriage, insisting on visiting tomorrow to propose formally.
Mulling over his messages, I headed to the study to find my second brother.
The door was ajar, just a small crack left open.
I was about to push it open when I heard my second brother's voice from inside.
He sounded displeased.
"Our parents left her so much money, and it's all going to the Hawthorne family eventually. Isn't that a total waste of money?"
My The third chimed in.
"I don't get it either. Why does a girl need so much money? She'll spend her husband's money anyway and just bleed us dry."
My eldest brother stopped them.
"Stella is marrying into the Hawthorne family. Don't talk like that."
The two of them fell silent.
Then Blanche interjected.
"Actually, I have an idea. It could ensure that Stella doesn't take the money with her, and it won't cause any rifts. But..."
She bit her lip and looked at my eldest brother. "After all, she is the young lady. Wouldn't that be a bit too harsh?"
He was silent for a moment, rubbing his temples.
"The Hawthornes specifically asked for her hand, so we can't create any animosity."
"But the company needs money right now... and she's just a girl. She doesn't need that much money anyway."
He motioned for Blanche to continue.
