To please Cedric in the past, I had learned massage techniques.
James must have realized this but refrained from asking where I had learned it, not wanting to ruin the moment.
He closed his eyes and mumbled, "I know you're dwelling on Laura. It hurts me too... But Rosemary, your story with Laura is already a tragedy. I don't want ours to be one too."
My fingers paused mid-massage.
"It's not just about Laura," I said softly. "James, I've made up my mind. I'm never getting married."
"Why?"
"Laura and Daphne both died because of me. My life was bought with theirs. I feel like I don't deserve to live well."
"I don't need love or companionship. Living in solitude is my penance. I caused the deaths of my two best friends. I deserve a lifetime of suffering."
James's eyes widened in shock, a hint of confusion softening his usual sharpness.
"But they would want you to be happy," he said.
I gave a faint smile. "But I can't."
The guilt and sorrow weigh too heavily. How could I dare to enjoy life, knowing it was built on the sacrifice of Laura and Daphne?
Laura's story ended with human traffickers; Daphne's with Cedric's darkness. Both left scars on me that will never heal. Even if I'm still alive, I'm nothing more than a shell, moving through a world I no longer belong to.
I deserve to rot among weeds, to be gnawed at by insects, to endure endless suffering as a form of atonement.
James looked despondent, his aura dimming with defeat. For a long time, he said nothing.
