Cedric was not the kind of man who feels regret.
Expecting him to grovel in a clichéd "chasing his wife" scenario was as foolish as dreaming. He only calculated the most effective way to achieve his goals, and everything he did served that purpose.
Right now, his goal is to keep me—even win my heart.
I could give it to him, but only if he gives me something in return...
"Do you want company shares?" he asked.
My brow twitched, and for a moment, I lost control of my expression, rendered speechless by shock.
Cedric seemed amused by my reaction. His previously tense mood eased, and he carried me into his study.
---
It was my first time in Cedric's study.
The room exuded an air of solemnity, its office desk hiding sordid files and documents beneath its polished surface.
He set me down in a chair.
My eyes were immediately drawn to a folder on his computer desktop labeled "GM"—the very files Daphne had mentioned, capable of ruining him.
My heartbeat quickened.
Cedric, unaware, rummaged through his briefcase before pulling out a thick stack of papers.
"Equity transfer agreement," I read aloud, unable to hide my astonishment.
"Does this seem inappropriate?" I asked.
"Not at all," Cedric replied, patting my head in good spirits.
In a low voice, he said:
"Rosemary, I've thought about it for a long time and didn't know what to give you to express my feelings.
"In the past, with other women, even with Daphne, I never cared what they thought. As long as I was happy, that was enough.
"But with you, I want you to be happy too. At the very least, I want you to understand my feelings for you."
He pushed the agreement toward me, his tone gentle."Marry me, and I'll transfer half of my shares to you. Rosemary, do you like this gift?"
Trembling, I took the papers, biting my lip without speaking, looking utterly stunned.
Cedric's mood improved further. He leaned down, planting a kiss on my brow.
"Rosemary, I will treat you well from now on," he said softly.
---
I couldn't comprehend what had caused Cedric's sudden change, so I asked directly:
"Why is your behavior now so different from before?"
In the past, he had seemed intent on beating me to death, yet now he was offering money and shares. "It's unsettling, Mr. Ravenswood."
The smile on Cedric's face faded slightly.
He raised a hand to caress my cheek.
"You're the first woman I've ever desired. That's enough of a reason.
"I need an heir, but I refuse to lower myself to be with a woman I find physically repulsive. Rosemary, do you understand?"
—So that was the real reason.
Cedric needed a child and was desperate to hold onto me, the only one who could spark his desire. He rationalized his feelings as "love."
I nodded. "I understand, Mr. Ravenswood."
"I've treated you poorly before, but Rosemary, you must understand, my father treated my mother the same way. It's hereditary; I can't help it."
He patted my head. "Don't worry. I'll try to control myself, and you shouldn't provoke me too much."
I bit my lip and nodded silently.
