The person who saved Cedric in the snow wasn't me, nor was it Daphne.
The pure, innocent savior Cedric cherished in his memories had long perished at the hands of the pedophilic orphanage director.
I didn't scorn Daphne for using this lie to earn Cedric's love. If our roles were reversed, I might have done the same.
—But she shouldn't have turned around and humiliated me.
I quietly looked at the steaming bowl of soup before me and asked her softly:
"Daphne, what do you think Cedric would do if he found out you're an impostor?"
I lifted my wrist to show her the scars from his whip.
Daphne's face was ashen, but she steadied herself. "What do you want?"
"Convince him to let me go to university."
Her eyes narrowed with suspicion. "How do I know you won't reveal my secret?"
"Exposing this would harm both of us," I replied. "Laura is dead. No one can predict how Cedric might react in his fury. I don't want to die alongside you unless absolutely necessary."
Daphne bit her lip and finally relented. "Fine, I'll try."
---
Cedric had a complex personality, a mix of sadism and masochism.
He derived sadistic pleasure from tormenting me but submitted masochistically to Daphne.
The more Daphne acted out, the more exhilarated he seemed. The more I feared him, the more he thrived.
In short, he was twisted.
Daphne's method of persuading him involved putting me down:
"You're really going to let her avoid school and just enjoy life by marrying? There's no such thing as a free ride."
Cedric gave her a cold glance. "You don't think she deserves it?"
Daphne smiled sweetly. "Of course not! She doesn't deserve it. Not studying would mean luxury and comfort. Rosemary isn't fit for that."
She added with a laugh, "I heard she wants to study engineering. It's tough and exhausting. Maybe someday she'll come crawling back to you. You mustn't go soft on her."
Something in Cedric's expression shifted. To my surprise, he agreed:
"You're right. It's time she had something to keep her busy."
Daphne's shoulders relaxed slightly, and she cast a covert glance at me, hidden at the top of the stairs, with a faint smirk.
---
A few days later, I was packing for university when Daphne leaned casually against the doorframe, watching me with a sneer.
"I hear Cedric is negotiating with the Beaumonts to switch the marriage arrangement. Instead of their main heir, you'll be matched with someone from a distant branch of the family."
"That branch family has no money or status. Even if you marry into it, you'll still be at Cedric Ravenswood's mercy. Rosemary, you can't escape."
I shoved a stuffed toy into my suitcase with force, refusing to even glance at her.
Daphne stepped closer, looking down at me with disdain. Her gaze fell on the books piled high on my desk.
She sneered, "So eager to study, huh? What a pity. Whether it's studying or marrying, Rosemary, you were born to be lowly.
"Cedric only brought you back to serve me. You'd better put all those wild ideas out of your mind."
"Are you done?"
I didn't spare her a glance, picked up my backpack, and headed for the door. As I passed her, I paused briefly and said softly, "Admitting you're jealous of me... is it that hard?"
