Cedric never liked me. Adopting me was only a way to give Daphne a companion.
His favoritism toward Daphne was widely known in the city, but when it came to me, his tone was always dismissive.
"Just Daphne's servant."
Standing quietly behind him, I lowered my gaze, gripping the book in my hands tightly as his words pierced through me.
I wasn't greedy. In fact, I was grateful to Cedric.
The Ravenswood family paid for my education, allowing me to go to school and pursue knowledge.
During the countless nights of being overlooked, I buried myself in books, voraciously consuming their contents.
It was my only escape.
But when I held the acceptance letter from the top University, a smile barely began to form on my face before Cedric casually snatched it, folded it in half, and tore it apart.
"Daphne isn't here, so you will marry into the Beaumont family for her. You don't need to attend university."
He reminded me lightly yet firmly, "Rosemary, being able to take Daphne's place is an honor for you."
---
That night, I sat on the floor, piecing together the shredded acceptance letter under the light of a flashlight. I pressed the fragments to my chest.
Tears streamed down my face in heavy droplets, and I bit my lip to wipe them away.
Cedric had no mercy for me. If he said I couldn't go to university, he would not relent.
Left with no options, I packed a small bundle that night and fled the Ravenswood estate under the cover of darkness.
I ran for eight hours straight.
When Cedric found me, the first rays of dawn illuminated his cold, furious face. Slowly folding his belt, he said, "Rosemary, you're as foolish as ever."
Behind his hypocritical mask, Cedric rarely struck me, but when he did, it was enough to make me wish for death.
That day, he dragged me back by my ankle.
Yes, dragged.
