I coughed lightly, unsettled by the melancholic atmosphere, and decided to broach the subject I'd been avoiding.
"Why are you helping me? And how do you know those things?"
The cool evening breeze made her stiffen momentarily. She exhaled slowly, adjusting her posture to look at me seriously.
"Eleanor, do you believe in past lives?"
I would never forget that night.
This doe-eyed girl clung to me, her delicate fingers clutching my clothes, whispering her tragic past.
From an omniscient perspective, the Female Lead's life seemed charmed. But for Beatrice, it was a powerless, maddening tragedy.
Adored as she was, she resembled a domesticated pet, dependent on those who liked her, unable to escape.
"Alaric is a monster. I wanted to leave, but I couldn't."
Tears shimmered in her eyes."You saved me, Eleanor."
"You fed me, clothed me, let me study and work, and even brought me into your company... For the first time in my life, I felt alive during that time."
She smiled, resting her head against my chest, her long hair cascading down, carrying the faint scent of rose as it brushed against my fingers.
My voice was cold.
"So, Beatrice, what do you want to do in this life?"
---
At last, I understood why the plot had deviated so drastically from its original trajectory.
Because Beatrice had been reborn.
With a knowing smile, she sowed discord among the Ashford brothers and their mother, allowing me to reap the benefits.
She used knowledge from her past life to help me avoid disaster after disaster, enabling me to reach where I am today.
The Female Lead of a doting novel had awakened and no longer wanted to be adored.
How ironic.
"So, Beatrice, what exactly do you want?"
"All my actions in front of the Ashford family were to create a rift between you and Alaric. I couldn't stand you sharing a bed with him. As for what comes next..."
She smiled, her lips curving beautifully, exuding both allure and innocence.
"I'm already in the gutter, Eleanor. But I want to lift you higher and higher... I'll help you achieve your dreams, no matter the cost."
---
After sending Beatrice back that day, I couldn't shake an uneasy feeling, as though something was about to happen.
Even while preparing for the board meeting, my thoughts were scattered. Lucas noticed and asked what was wrong.
I shook my head.
The night before the meeting, my secretary received a phone call and turned pale.
She informed me that several board members who had previously supported me had suddenly defected. The overwhelming advantage I had over Alaric was gone.
I recalled Alaric's househusband act from the other day and frowned.
"No surprise there. Alaric still managed to find time to sabotage me."
I instructed my secretary, "Board members don't turn coat easily. Find out what leverage Alaric has on them."
Their defections had been unusually resolute.
I spent hours pleading, my voice hoarse from persuasion. One board member even refused to see me, leaving me locked out of their office.
The secretary hesitated before suggesting, "Perhaps we should contact someone from the underground scene..."
"No need," I replied coldly. "Alaric is watching closely. We can't afford to touch that kind of thing."
After a pause, I added, "Get in touch with Beatrice for me."
