I arranged to meet Beatrice.
She arrived in a blue dress, her sunflower hair clip in place, cradling a coffee cup and smiling sweetly.
"Eleanor, is there something you wanted to talk about?"
I smirked coldly. "Let's not pretend. I don't want to have a close relationship with my husband's mistresses."
Beatrice's eyes filled with tears. "Eleanor..."
"Enough."
I waved her off impatiently. "I called you out to ask one thing. What exactly are you after?"
"What do you mean?"
"Don't play coy," I said firmly. "With your abilities, you don't need a man to survive. Why are you clinging to Alaric? What's your goal?"
Beatrice was no ordinary person.
She had managed to bind two men to her without any tangible benefit. Such intelligence and cunning were beyond me.
Her laziness seemed more like a calculated facade to lower others' guards.
"Even if it's for status, you could aim higher. The Ashford family is prominent, but Alaric isn't exceptional enough for you to lower yourself this much."
What was she really after?
Beatrice smiled faintly. "What do you think, Eleanor?"
"Do you want the Ashford family?"
Beatrice tilted her head, considering. "Something like that."
"Then we're enemies." I stood, grabbing my bag to leave.
Beatrice's soft voice stopped me.
"Eleanor, I'm not your enemy. I'm your..."
"What did you say?"
The wind scattered her words, and I didn't catch the rest.
Beatrice's flushed face broke into a wry smile.
"Nothing."
---
I had never understood Beatrice.
Even knowing she was the female lead of a slacker novel, even with that filter, I couldn't decipher her.
Her perpetual smile was like a gentle breeze, subtle yet sharp. When it pierced my heart, it made no sound.
Now, the Ashford family's trajectory was following the novel's plot.
Beatrice and George had divorced temporarily due to misunderstandings, and Alaric was beginning to show his feelings for her.
Soon, Beatrice and George would remarry, and Alaric's love would become impossible to conceal.
Forceful possession, betrayal, and ultimately, shared love...
This was the most dramatic, tension-filled, and taboo-laden part of the story—the highlight of the novel.
Now, everything revolved around the male and female leads, while I was just a backdrop to intensify their drama.
When Alaric couldn't suppress his desire for possession, that would be the moment I'd be ousted from the Ashford family.
Though Alaric couldn't shake my position now, time and opportunity always outweighed human effort.
No matter what I did, I couldn't surpass the divine intervention favoring the male lead.
So what was the point of everything I was doing?
For the first time in my life, I felt a deep sense of confusion.
---
"You don't have to think this way."
Lucas poured me a cup of tea, speaking softly to comfort me.
"Eleanor, the Ashford family isn't something you have to swallow whole. Your skills and accomplishments are real. No one can take those away."
I murmured, "But I still feel unsatisfied."
Why did the male lead deserve divine favor, while everything I did paled in comparison?
"Eleanor!" Lucas's voice grew firm. "Focus on what's in front of you."
"The fate won't favor a waste forever."
"What you need to do is defeat that waste."
