It wasn't that I cared about Alaric having feelings for Beatrice.
There was no love between us in the first place. Our marriage was for the Ashford family's money and resources, and I had my own indulgences. I had no grounds to criticize Alaric.
The main issue was... Beatrice's behavior. Everyone in the Ashford family who got close to her seemed to fall under her spell.
Her female lead aura terrified me.
If I couldn't fight her, I could at least avoid her.
I grew increasingly afraid to return to the Ashford household.
---
After the South Hill project ended, I secured another one from the board, which accounted for a third of the Ashford family's next quarter's cash flow.
Alaric didn't look happy about it.
Not that I cared.
Once I completed this project, I'd have control over half the family's assets.
I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement. My brother, Lucas, noticed and subtly warned me not to get carried away, lest Alaric retaliate.
Alaric wouldn't.
He was too consumed by Beatrice to care about company affairs, busy competing with George for her attention. The female lead aura had seemingly reduced his intelligence, turning him into a lovesick puppy.
---
The project progressed smoothly until we hit a snag with the bidding documents.
A mole from a collaborating firm leaked our bid details, forcing me to rewrite everything. I worked tirelessly, my lips chapped and eyes bloodshot.
And then, Alaric convened a board meeting to publicly criticize me for inefficiency, proposing a change in project leadership.
It was obvious he had set me up.
But with the leak occurring on my watch, I had no choice but to swallow my pride.
Just as I was about to apologize, my phone buzzed. I glanced at the screen, my eyes narrowing before I looked up.
"The collaborating firm just informed me they've caught the mole who leaked the documents. Should we involve the police?"
I asked Alaric softly, "What do you think, Mr. Ashford?"
Alaric's expression darkened.
---
The message wasn't from the firm; it was from an unknown number, containing records of Alaric's dealings with the mole.
After the meeting, I forwarded the evidence to Alaric and pondered for a moment before smiling.
"The documents are being rewritten and won't delay the project. But this evidence... should I make it public?"
"What do you want?"
"The next quarter's partnership project with Horizon. I'm very interested."
Alaric's face turned icy.
"Eleanor, your greed knows no bounds."
"That's fine."
I smiled. "I can handle it."
