In the days leading up to the project's completion, I rarely returned to the Ashford residence. I either stayed with my brother or crashed at the homes of some enthusiastic young actors, all of which was infinitely better than watching Alaric and Beatrice's disturbing relationship.
But even when I avoided her, Beatrice sought me out.
I was reviewing materials at my brother's office when my secretary informed me that Beatrice had visited mine.
"Beatrice?"
My brother, Lucas, thought for a moment. "Your husband's brother's wife?"
I nodded. "She's a peculiar one. Everyone in the Ashford family turns into fools around her."
Lucas teased me. "If they all lose their wits, doesn't that mean the company will be yours? Isn't that what you want?"
"Not that ruthless," I said.
I returned to the office, only to see Beatrice wearing a plain white dress, her hair pinned back with a sunflower clip, soft waves cascading down her shoulders. She looked delicate and pitiful.
I sat across from her, poured myself a cup of tea, and asked, "What do you want?"
She blinked her wide eyes. "Eleanor, are you avoiding the Ashford home because of me? There's nothing between your husband and me. He just feels sorry for me..."
"Stop right there."
I set my cup down on the table."We're both women. Let's not beat around the bush."
"When a man feels sorry for a woman, it's usually for one reason. Do I need to spell it out?"
"If you want to play the seductress, drop the pitiful act. It's too fake."
I spoke sharply.
Beatrice bit her lip, her eyes welling up with tears. Sniffling, she wiped at her face and choked out, "Eleanor, I really didn't mean to hurt you... Can't you believe me?"
"I can't."
I replied coldly, "If there's nothing else, please leave. I'm very busy."
Beatrice hesitated, dabbing at her tears with a tissue, before rising to leave, her fingers nervously twisting the hem of her dress.
"At least don't hate me, okay?"
"I don't hate you."
I rubbed my temples. "So, can you leave now?"
