The next morning, I woke early, dragged the suitcase into a taxi, and headed for my ex-husband's estate.
He was waiting at the gate.
One arm held Alaric while the other reached out instinctively to take my hand. I sidestepped him.
His once-pleasant expression darkened.
"Evelyn!"
"My hands are wet," I said softly. "I spilled milk and just washed them."
His expression eased slightly.
Walking through the vast estate, I watched his back and glanced at Alaric's sleepy, half-closed eyes.
My ex-husband's pajamas were old, a cartoon design I had bought long ago. He used to call them childish, but now the hood was frayed and worn.
On his finger was our wedding ring, the large diamond glinting subtly.
Things he once discarded now seemed precious.
I found myself puzzled.
"Do you even know what you're doing?" I asked.
He stopped. "What?"
"You treated me so horribly before, and now you're acting like you cherish me."
I looked at him calmly, repeating, "Do you even know what you're doing?"
His actions were illogical and contradictory, with no discernible reason or transition.
I couldn't understand.
My ex-husband handed Alaric to the butler and strode toward me.
"I know," he said gently. "You've come back, and I won't hold grudges. I was wrong to treat you poorly before. That blow you gave me, let's call it even.
"From now on, we'll live as a family."
He looked genuinely happy.
It was as if that single strike had settled some invisible debt, allowing him to stand on moral high ground and judge me from above.
I curled my lips into a faint smile.
