When I got home, I stared out the window for a while before taking a shower. That's when I received a call from my ex-husband.
His voice was filled with venom: "Evelyn, do you believe I can have you and that boy toy of yours thrown in jail?"
That voice was all too familiar.
In those two nightmare-like years, in that ridiculous storyline, and in countless midnight dreams, I had heard it over and over again.
Every time, it made my heart race with fear.
Fingering my phone, listening to his familiar, threatening tone, I felt an instinctive shiver run through me. Slowly, I pulled the corners of my lips into a bitter smile.
I'd been avoiding him for so long.
Staying far away, not thinking about him, focusing on raising Alaric with the faint hope that I could escape this morally bankrupt madman.
But now, I didn't want to run anymore.
"I'll come by tomorrow," I told him gently. "You and Alaric wait for me, okay?"
My ex-husband's voice faltered with unexpected joy.
"Alright, I'll wait for you. Alaric and I will wait..."
I hung up the phone.
Moonlight spilled through the window. I propped myself on my arms, staring at the darkened sky.
I couldn't pinpoint where this sudden courage came from.
I only knew that when Cedric said he admired me, that he thought I was amazing, the light in his eyes stung mine.
A faint but undeniable impulse urged me to shred the cage my ex-husband had built around me.
I thought, "I can't let him down."
