Chapter 7

　　On the plane, I busied myself with work emails.
　　The week I was absent from work, my colleagues were overwhelmed. My inbox flooded with concerned, inquisitive, and subtly reproachful emails.
　　I replied to them one by one until I saw my supervisor's response to my resignation letter.
　　— Rejected.
　　Message: Come to my office.
　　Signed: Cedric Ashbourne.
　　My heart tightened, my lips involuntarily bit hard enough to draw blood, and a metallic taste filled my throat.
　　I felt ashamed.
　　Cedric, my senior during university, was the one who had fought tooth and nail to recruit me into this company.
　　I hadn't even achieved much, and now I'd caused such a scene. He must be deeply disappointed in me.
　　The plane began its descent, and the pressure pressed heavily on me. My eardrums felt like they were about to burst.
　　I held back tears, tilted my head to look out of the window, hiding the sorrow and fragility that filled my chest.
　　It wasn't just Cedric who was disappointed in me... At this point, I couldn't help but despise myself.
　　I'd wasted six years of my youth and passion on an ungrateful person, leading to absenteeism, resignation, and impulsiveness unbecoming of a twenty-seven-year-old. I acted like an inexperienced student.
　　I raised my arm wearily, covering my eyes.
