Though my transfer wasn't finalized, I resigned immediately and flew back for Alaric. The moment I landed, his bodyguards escorted me to his mansion.
I ignored the urge to yell at him and rushed to Alaric. Seeing his flushed little face playing happily with blocks, I finally relaxed.
Then anger surged. I grabbed him, ignoring his struggles, and smacked his bottom.
"How many times have I told you? Don't go with strangers! Did you forget?"
Alaric looked aggrieved, tears welling up in his eyes. "But he's Daddy."
I was too furious to speak. Turning to my ex-husband, I sneered, "If you wanted to see him, you could've gone through the proper channels. Sneaking around like this is so disgraceful."
He smirked and changed the subject. "The child is adorable."
"None of your business," I shot back without hesitation.
He acted like he didn't hear. "For the sake of giving our child a good environment, let's consider remarrying, Evelyn."
My response was a resounding slap.
"Dream it!"

Alaric, upset from being scolded, curled up in a corner, refusing to eat or drink, stubbornly resisting me. Eventually, my heart ached too much, and I softened first.
"Sweetheart, Mommy and Daddy really can't be together. But next time you want to see him, tell Mommy first, okay?"
He lowered his head, sipping water in tiny gulps, silent and unyielding, looking so much like his father.
That familiar sense of helplessness I used to feel during our marriage came rushing back, squeezing my chest.
From childhood to now, I washed his diapers, fed him milk, rushed him to the hospital when he fell ill and stayed up all night by his side. It was I who watched him grow, little by little, from a tiny baby to a six-year-old child.
I didn't understand, why did he so desperately long for that careless, absentee father?
I propped myself against the sofa, slowly pressing my fingers to my temples.
