I hadn't thought about my ex-husband in ages. He was utterly unredeemable—his mother and childhood sweetheart were always right, and whatever I said was dismissed as lies or schemes.
Even when I, carrying Alaric, was pushed down the stairs by his little sweetheart, as long as she cried, made a fuss, or lowered her head, the male lead forced me to sign a letter of understanding, his face full of impatience: "Isn't this nothing? She is still young, she can't have any stain on her."
Looking back, I was merciful not to stab him when we divorced.
Still, despite our animosity, Alaric was his son. I never intended to keep that from him. Besides, I wanted Alaric to grow up in a better place like the capital city.
My company happened to have an opening there, so I applied for a transfer. But before it was approved, his kindergarten teacher called to tell me Alaric was missing.
"He slipped out during recess and left a note saying he was going to find his dad."
Panicked, I skipped work and searched for him all day, my hands shaking so badly I could barely hold my phone when he finally called.
He was ecstatic. "Mommy, I found Daddy! We're on a plane now!"
"What?!"
My ex-husband took the phone, his magnetic voice coming through. "Evelyn Beaumont, come to Ravenwood. We need to talk."
