When I got home, I immediately announced that I was dropping out of school.
My mother, looking as though the world were ending, grabbed me and said, "You're about to graduate. Can't you just wait a little longer?
"Did you bully Yvonne again at school?
"I've told you so many times, Yvonne is kinder and more considerate than you. You should be learning from her. At the very least, try to be her friend! How can you keep picking on her?
"Come on, let's go to school and apologize to Yvonne and Evander. We've had ties with the Kingswell family for over thirty years. You can't ruin that over your mistakes!"
Rubbing my temples in exhaustion,
I shook off her grip and walked toward my room.
I walked toward my room, soothing her, "Mom, I'm tired. Can I rest for one day? I'll apologize tomorrow."
Seeing how firm I was, my mother relented. "Fine, but you must apologize to Yvonne tomorrow. She has a soft heart and will definitely forgive you."
Before closing the door, I asked her calmly, "Mom, do you think I'm wrong?"
She didn't even hesitate. "Of course you're wrong."
"Oh," I said. "And what exactly am I wrong about?"
This question seemed to stump her.
She frowned deeply, pondering for a long while, but couldn't come up with an answer.
Finally, she said, "You've been spoiled since you were little. Your personality is unruly. Yvonne is simple and kind, so it's only natural that you bully her."
I rolled my eyes.
Not wanting to hear more, I slammed the door shut.
That night, while my mother anxiously waited for me to apologize to Yvonne.
I booked a flight abroad and left to enjoy a carefree vacation.
During this time, my mother bombarded me with calls and messages:
[Rosamund, you're getting more and more out of hand. I told you to apologize, and you had the audacity to run away!]
[Yvonne was very sad when she found out you left the country. She thinks it's all her fault and even begged us to bring you back. What a kind girl. Can you bear to let her live in self-blame?]
[I regret ever giving birth to you. If Yvonne were my daughter, none of this would be happening.]
[Evander and Yvonne are getting engaged. The ceremony is next month on the 18th. You've known Evander since you were children. Are you not planning to come?]
[Your father and I are thinking of adopting Yvonne as our goddaughter. With our support, she'll have more confidence when she marries into the Kingswell family.]
[The engagement party and the adoption ceremony will be held together. If you don't come back, I'll disown you!]
[...]
The last message was sent two weeks ago.
Checking the date, I saw it was April 15th.
It seemed about time for me to return.
